Altus Hospice was established in Texas in 2007 and has been proudly serving Texas ever since. Our emphasis is on palliative care and quality of life. Every effort is made to make the patient more comfortable and fullfill their wishes. Our team is highly trained to provide patients and families with medical, practical, emotional, and spiritual support.

HOW DOES A PATIENT GET ADMITTED TO HOSPICE?

Anyone, including a patient or physician, may request hospice care. Upon receiving a request, a hospice coordinator will contact a patient’s physician to make sure that hospice care is appropriate. The patient and family will work with the hospice liaison to complete consent for admission to hospice and document insurance information. Next,
the hospice team will meet with the patient and family to develop a personalized care plan.

WILL MEDICARE, MEDICAID OR PRIVATE INSURANCE COVER HOSPICE CARE?
Hospice care coverage is available through Medicare and Medicaid in 44 states and the District of Columbia. Most private insurance plans and managed care organizations also include hospice care

as a bene t. At many hospices, including Atlus Hospice, patients who lack the funds for payment are eligible to receive free services through contributions and gifts.

WHEN SHOULD A DECISION ABOUT ENTERING A HOSPICE PROGRAM BE MADE, AND WHO SHOULD MAKE IT?
Any time during a life-limiting illness is an appropriate time to discuss care options, including hospice. By law, the decision belongs to the patient. Understandably, many people are uncomfortable with the idea of stopping an aggressive effort to “beat” a disease. Altus Hospice staff members are highly sensitive to these concerns and are always available to discuss them with the patient, family, and physician.
