[dropcap size=small]M[/dropcap]ore than 29.1 million Americans are living with diabetes and 8.1 million who are unaware of their disease. Of those, 25 percent will eventually develop a foot ulcer due to diabetes complications. Jimmy Hammonds is part of this statistic. Jimmy suffered from a diabetic foot ulcer with infection into the bone. The fear of losing his leg led Jimmy to the doctor. His podiatrist referred him to the Healogics, Inc. Wound Care Center® at Baptist Beaches for additional treatment to heal the wound and save his leg from amputation.

Healogics, headquartered in Jacksonville, FL, has nearly 800 Wound Care Centers across the nation that are a part of their connected network of outpatient centers, academic medical centers and other post-acute sites putting. Patient care is at the forefront of everything they do.

Jimmy’s team of doctors quickly took action to heal Jimmy using several advanced wound care treatments. Jimmy’s compliance to his treatment plan was imperative for success. Now healed, Jimmy’s leg was saved thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Baptist Beaches Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. On his last day of treatment, Jimmy was able to take part in the Wound Care Center’s favorite tradition – providing a healed certificate and a special vintage diving helmet key chain – to represent the hyperbaric oxygen therapy Jimmy received as part of his treatment. Every Healogics Center has a different tradition to help their patients celebrate their healed wounds.

As the seventh leading cause of death in the US, diabetes is a complex disease with many risk factors including heredity, age, diet, inactivity and obesity. Diabetes can also cause heart disease, stroke, lack of circulation and feeling in the lower limbs and other complications which can result in hard-to-heal wounds.

November serves as Diabetes Awareness Month to help shed light on this condition that is often associated with chronic wounds, and share stories like Jimmy’s that are the reason the Healogics team works so hard every day to treat patients with the upmost care and compassion to get them back to enjoying life.

Since foot ulcers precede 85 percent of lower extremity amputations, Healogics Wound Care Centers across the country offer those living with diabetes the following tips to take care of their feet:

• Get comprehensive foot exams each time you visit your healthcare provider, at least four times a year.

• Perform daily self-inspections of the feet or have a family member assist.

• Clean toenails and take care of corns and calluses on a regular basis.

• Choose supportive, proper footwear, like shoes and socks.

• Improve circulation by eating healthy and exercising on a regular basis.

• Stop smoking immediately!

The team at Healogics has a true passion and enthusiasm for wound care that can be felt from the first moment you walk into the Center to the last high-five of the day. They work day in and day out to ensure people like Jimmy are able to return to days with his wife enjoying rides in his yellow Corvette.
