Turn on the Afterburn to Outsmart Holiday Weight Gain

Many workouts boast that they can help you burn extra calories even after the hard work is done, but making the claim and actually seeing it happen are two different things. When it comes to real afterburn, it’s truly about science.

Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) is the physiological theory behind exercise that increases your metabolism for up to 36 hours after your workout ends. Orangetheory Fitness Huebner makes EPOC a reality.

Ellen Latham, founder of Orangetheory Fitness states “When I get [members] working at 84 percent of their maximum heart rate—what we call the orange zone—for 12-20 minutes, they’re in oxygen debt. Think of it as that period of time in your workout when you feel like you can’t catch your breath. That’s when lactic acid builds up in your blood stream.” EPOC helps break down that lactic acid and speeds up your metabolism, contributing to better health and increased energy.

A great example of this comes from one of our members, Chris, who came in for a free OTF class in June. At the time, he was in search of an exercise program that would help him lose weight and improve his health.

Since becoming a member of the OTF Huebner family, Chris has shed 75 pounds.

Finally, in addition to the amazing afterburn effect, researchers at Brigham Young University found that study participants who worked out in the morning tended to move more the rest of the day burning even more calories and they also responded less to pictures of tempting food. (So, head to OTF Huebner on Thanksgiving morning before you dive into turkey and dressing!)
